About the artist
What I think about
I am a mixed media artist who is fascinated by the perception of human identities, how they are created and how their resonances impact on time past, present and future.
What really goes on inside the human mind? Why do we become the people we do, why do so many people never become the person they could have been? I’m intrigued by the secrets we hide and the traces we leave in inanimate objects and the landscape.
I am interested in the theories of Karl Yung and am intrigued by the work of artists who show a darker, primeval side of the human psyche. There is an inner struggle or torment in the figures of Egon Schiele, Frances Bacon, Lucien Freud and Signorelli and there are clear links with the ancients and their artefacts in the works of Henry Moore, Giaciametti and Louise Bourgeoise.
My work reflects my personal journey but I know that many people will recognise it as mirroring their own. We are all at the mercy of our pasts; personal, ancestral and universal as well as the social constructs that influence the paths we take and choices we make.
What I use
My small-scale, figurative sculptures use a variety of media including glass, pewter, concrete, wood and ceramics. I play with the natural contrasts between materials - the translucent, ethereal qualities of cast glass with the solidity of concrete – the radiance and newness of fused glass with the aged warmth of old wood - each material speaking its own language and telling its own story.

What I've done
I returned to full time education, as a mature student, and gained a 1st class honours degree from University College Falmouth in 2009. It was there that I honed my skills in creating glass and mixed media sculpture.
It was at university that I started to explore themes relating to the nature of memory and resonances that change the way we react to life's experiences and how our hopes and dreams are constantly under pressure from real or imagined expectations. I discovered studio glass as an artistic medium and fell in love with its ethereal and translucent qualities.
Since graduation I have worked as a teacher, a researcher and as Technical Instructor for Glass at University College Falmouth.
Now I live and work in France where I have a new workshop and studio, and I'm creating new works that resonate with the ancient landscape that surrounds me.
